Santa Marcela farmers get free training on banana processing to boost income

Santa Marcela, Apayao – Banana growers in the municipality of Santa Marcela, Apayao can now scale up their farm products and earn extra income after being given free training on banana processing from June 13-14, 2024.

 

Initiated by the Department of Science and Technology - Apayao, the training provided the farmers skills and knowledge on how to create more products from bananas, which is their main crop.

 

It is part of the agency’s commitment to promoting grassroots development and strengthening underprivileged farmer associations, particularly those located in rural areas.

The training was attended by twenty-five banana farmers from the Rambak ti Consuelo Livelihood Farmers Association. It was held in Barangay Consuelo, where the participants were assisted on how to make banana chips, cookies, cakes, and other banana-based bakery products.

 

They were also reminded about Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and food safety regulations.

 

After the two-day training, the participants are expected to apply what they have learned not just to generate income but also to help boost the economy of Santa Marcela and the whole Apayao.

 

Additionally, they were expected to learn more about the GMP, various food safety measures, the importance of post-harvest processing, and to demonstrate banana post-harvest processing.
