1 dead, 2 hurt in Cauayan riding-in-tandem shooting

Isabela, Philippines – A man who just went out to sell palay or unmilled rice did not make it back home alive after he was gunned down by unidentified riding-in-tandem assailants on Monday, Sept. 18, 2023.

Marlon Quijano, 44, went to Barangay Rizaluna, Alicia along with Dabburab Punong Barangay Joseph Benigno, 55, and Elpidio Camongao Jr., 47, from Barangay San Francisco.

The three headed home after selling their palay in the village. Quijano was riding his motorcycle, while Benigno and Camongao were both on board another motorcycle.

It was around 8:30 p.m. when they reached a dark area along Purok 7 of San Francisco village. That time, a motorcycle suddenly overtook them and a gunman fired at them multiple times and then drove off.

Residents nearby who heard the gunfire rushed to the scene and immediately brought the victims to the separate hospitals.

Quijano sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, Benigno and Camongao are still recovering at the hospital.

The police are investigating the incident to establish the motive and arrest the suspect.

Authorities are looking into politics and all possible angles behind the shooting.

Benigno is on his third term and is set to step down from his post after the October 2023 election.
