1 killed, another survived in separate Abra shooting incidents on Sunday

Dolores, Abra – Two days following an attempt to kill an ex-village chief, two separate shooting incidents transpired in Abra on Sunday, September 1, killing one and injuring a former municipal councilor.


The first incident transpired around 9 a.m. on said date. The victim was identified as Gregorio Castillo Sr., 74, a resident of Poblacion, Lagangilang, Abra.


The victim was on board his white SUV when a riding-in-tandem suddenly fired three bullets at him. He sustained gunshot wounds to his head.


He was brought to the Seares Hospital where he is now being observed. The identity of the suspects and the motive of the crime are still being investigated.


It was known that the victim is a relative of Bangued Mayor Mila Valera and suspended Abra Vice Governor Joy Valera-Bernos.


Meantime, at around 4 p.m. on said date, a shooting incident occurred at Sitio Lugit, Patucannay, Tayum, Abra, killing a farmer.


The victim named Hidalgo Villanueva, 41, was a resident of the area but a native of Tarlac City.


According to police, they received a call at 5 p.m. on said date regarding the incident.


Based on the investigation, the victim was at the house of a certain Rodel Vibas when the shooting incident happened.


He likewise sustained gunshot wounds to his head resulting in his immediate death. The suspects –an unemployed individual and a construction worker are being chased by the police.


It is not known as of yet what type of gun was used in the incident and the motive of the crime.


To recall, it was on August 29, when an ex-barangay captain, alongside his companion, was also shot by unknown suspects around 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 29.


The former barangay captain identified as Marcelino Castillo Banayos, 58, sustained gunshot wounds to his head, while his nephew, named as Janssen Benauro Blanes, 20, was shot in his left arm and his head.


They were taken to a hospital after the incident.
