Balbalan, Kalinga – Some 102 underprivileged in and out-of-school youth in Balbalan were given a chance to work and get paid through the Department of Labor and Employment’s Special Program for Employment of Students and Out-of-school Youth (SPESOS).

Balbalan Information Office said the fund provided for the program is from DOLE and Balbalan LGU. 40 percent is from DOLE while 60 percent will be provided by the LGU.

The program in the said municipality was launched last week.

The aim of SPES is to provide temporary employment to said sector to augment their family’s income as well as ensure they are able to pursue their education.

The work assigned to the recipients is usually manual labor - these include cleaning drainage canals, clearing pathways, roads, and the surroundings of government offices.

It is hoped that the nature of work given to them will help bring about a realization of the value of hard work as well as an inspiration to work harder for the future.

The recipients are required to work for 20 days and shall be paid P437.59 a day.

In a talk by Mayor Almar Malannag, he told the youngsters not to think of poverty as a hindrance in pursuing their dreams, as the government has programs made for those willing to pursue a career or profession in the future.

“Who knows, that in the coming years, some of you will become officials of this LGU,” he told them, adding that he, himself did not imagine becoming the mayor of Balbalan.
