Top 10 NLE Passer chooses serving community over earning dollars

Nowadays, many Filipino professionals aspire to go out of the country to seek greener pastures and to look for opportunities to apply their field of specialization.

Paula Angela Vinluan Estepa, an alumna of Saint Louis University and top 10 of the November 2023 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination, is one of those whose doors are not close to the possibility of going abroad.

However, she emphasized the importance of serving the community first.

“We have to give back to our community po muna, especially knowing that our country needs a lot of nurses. And I think it would be a great opportunity to really apply what I have learned po and to prepare me na rin if mag-abroad,” she said.

Confident to pass, but not to top

Just like the other topnotchers, Estepa who graduated Magna Cum Laude never imagined her name would be included in the list of top performing examinees.

She recalled that when she finished answering the exam, she was relieved it was over but at the same time, she doubted if she could make it since there were questions she was not sure of the answer to.

The self-doubt she felt did not last long because she knew she gave her best in the exam.

“I told myself as I leave the room, “May laban mga sagot ko. Papasa yan.” I’m not bragging nor being overconfident, I just knew within myself that I’ll pass the board because I gave my 100% best. But never have I imagined I’ll top,” she conveyed.

Find joy in studying

When asked about her tip to the next PNLE takers, she shared that what worked best for her was enjoying the review.

“There’s not a concrete way to topping the board. You will be faced with many obstacles. But what worked best for me is finding joy in studying. You shouldn’t burden yourself too much and balance all your activities. Rest if you are tired,” she said.

She added that having mental breakdowns during review is part of the journey, but one must remind herself/himself of why he/she is studying in the first place.

“Having mental breakdowns is okay and it really happens. But at the end if the day, you should keep reminding yourself why are you doing this in the first place and never forget to pray. Prayers do really work!” she said.
