13-yr.-old girl who drowned Friday in Tocucan, Bontoc not yet found

Bontoc, Mt. Province – Authorities in Mountain Province are currently searching for a 13-year-old girl who reportedly drowned in the river in Tocucan, Bontoc yesterday, May 24.

The girl identified to be Veneizah “Kulasa” Atiwag was said to have gone to the river with her friends around 10:00 a.m. of said date and was last seen near the Tocucan Elementary School.

According to PMaj. Ryan Wakat, Bontoc Police Chief, the victim went to play at the riverbank with her friends, ages 12 – 13 years old. He relayed that the girl was allegedly walking over a rock when she slipped and fell into the water.

The police chief described that while the waters in said river is usually calm, it still has current, enough to drag a child. This could have been one of the reasons why the girl’s two teen friends who tried to save her failed to get her out of the waters.

After the Bontoc Operations Center received a distress call around 12:50 p.m., search and rescue teams together with volunteers have been deployed to three search areas to locate the body of Atiwag.

Authorities are yet to find the girl as of this writing.
