Balbalan, Kalinga – The local government unit of Balbalan led by Mayor Almar Malannag recently legalized the union of 15 couples in Poswoy village during a mass wedding ceremony.

Since he was sworn in as the town mayor, Malannag and his administration have been pursuing mass wedding as part of the social services to help the couple who have no financial means to get married.

While the mayor is knowledgeable that the couples who are living as husband and wife were solemnized under the customary practices of their tribes, they are still required to be legitimized under the laws of the government, says the local information office.

Malannag ensures that the members of the Municipal Marriage Council are regularly conducting information, education, and communication on the civil wedding requirements and process.

Interested couples, along with the council members, talk to set a schedule for the ceremony. Once set, the mayor and those from the Local Civil Registrar travel to the venue for the civil mass wedding.

In times when the couples do not have means, the LGU steps up to sponsor the food to be served after the ceremony.

On Sept. 19, 2023, 15 couples exchanged “I do’s” in front of Mayor Malannag as the solemnizing officer at Capas in Poswoy.

With the mayor were Vice Mayor Rowina Damian; LCR Officer Vergel Maglia; Marriage Counselor, Dr. Freda Catipay; and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Myrna Canapi.

The mass wedding is just some of the many government programs that the LGU have been bringing to the very doorsteps of community residents.
