15 inmates in Ifugao complete basic education in jail

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Kiangan, Ifugao – Fifteen people deprived of liberty (PDLs) in Ifugao were able to complete their basic education behind bars through the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education.

Such a milestone is among the innovations of Ifugao District Jail in providing the basic needs of those inside the reformation facility.

ALS is a substitute education program in the Philippines intended for those who do not have a formal education in schools. It allows them to complete basic education after completing a minimum of 800-hour practical learning.

Through said program, said inmates received their respective diplomas during the Moving-up and Graduation ceremony with the theme "Gradweyt ng Elementarya at High School: Hinubog ng Matatag na Edukasyon" on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at IDL facility in Kiangan, Ifugao.

Of the 15 PDLs, 6 of them are elementary graduates while 9 are junior high school completers. They were confirmed by Rosa Humiwat, Kiangan Public Schools District Supervisor.

Said ceremony was attended by JCINSP Gannisi W. Olosan, District Jail Warden, among other jail personnel.

Meantime, Angelina H. Dalipog, Executive Assistant IV of the Ifugao Provincial Government Office, served as the guest of honor and speaker during the ceremony.
