Bokod, Benguet - A friend's outing over the weekend along the North Luzon River in Barangay Ambuklao, Bokod, Benguet, turned into a tragedy as one ended drowning.

Police identified the victim as a 16-year-old student and a resident of La Trinidad, Benguet. The teenager was with his two classmates when the drowning incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2025.

According to the Bokod Municipal Police Station, the students went to the river because they wanted to enjoy nature and its surroundings. While doing so, the 16-year-old decided to have a swim. He also asked his buddies to join him, which they agreed to.

While the three were swimming, the 16-year-old extended his reach into the deep portion of the river, leading to his drowning.

His friends, during their interview with the police, said they tried to save the victim, but they failed to do so due to the strong current. The two left no choice but to inform other people about what had happened.

Those who were informed about the incident proceeded to the location for the rescue operation.  These included the barangay officials, residents, members of the Bokod MPS, BFP, and the LGU officials.

Despite the prompt response, the victim was already lifeless when his body was retrieved by the rescuers at around 2:55 p.m. the same day.

Following the incident, Bokod PNP, led by Police Major Gilbert Anselmo, cautioned residents anew to refrain from swimming in the rivers if the conditions are not favorable to prevent drowning incidents.
