2 men dead after boat capsizes in a lake in Bauko, Mt. Province

Bauko, Mt. Province – Two men ages 20 and 24 died after a boat they were rowing in a middle of a lake in Bauko, Mt. Province capsized the afternoon of Wednesday, December 21, police said.


Jay Vicente Opag and Mayzon Vicente Batatas from Kayan West, Tadian, were at Lake Lanas in Mayag, Bauko with their friends on the said date for a picnic.


They arrived there at around 10 AM, according to their companions.

While enjoying rowing and riding in a ‘bangka’ at 3 PM, the small boat suddenly capsized resulting in them to fell off the water.


Opag, upon realizing that his friend, Mayzon does not know how to swim and was already drowning tried to help the latter out but was not able to do it since they were drowned both.


Their companion called for help, of which, personnel of Bauko police, Bureau of Fire Protection-Bauko, barangay officials, and trained LGU personnel responded and immediately conducted a search and retrieval operation.

It was only around 7 AM on Thursday, December 22, that the remains of the two individuals were finally retrieved.


Police said that after a ritual conducted by elders, the body of Opag was ferried to his residence in Tadian while Batatas’ body is still in Mayag, Bauko.


Meantime, according to PDRRMC Mountain Province, it was the first time that a drowning incident transpired in the said lake.
