2 roads in Apayao declared as national highways

Apayao, Philippines – People of Apayao and those from neighboring provinces can look forward to enhanced productivity and improved accessibility with the conversion of two more local roads into national highways.

In June 2022, Piddig-Carasi (Ilocos Norte)-Calanasan-Langnao-Kabugao road, Kalinga-Apayao road connecting Balbalan, Pinukpuk, Kalinga and Conner, Apayao, Kabugao-Tineg were declared as national roads.

On August 1 and 2, 2023, the Department of Public Works and Highways issued an order directing the first and second District Engineering Offices of the province to take over the responsibility of maintaining and developing Tanglagan-Bucarot Road in Calanasan and Buluan-Banban-Puguin-Sacpil Road in Conner, reported the Provincial Information Office.

The roads were officially classified as national highways through Department Order No. 123, series of 2022, and Department Order No. 81, series of 2023, but it was only recently that the implementation orders were released.

With the declaration, Congresswoman Eleanor C. Bulut-Begtang and Governor Elias C. Bulut Jr. who used to source out or allocate funds for the maintenance and improvement of the major roads may now set such aside for other purposes.

The five-kilometer Tanglagan-Bucarot road, now called Calanasan-Adams-Pagudpud road, is an alternative route going to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte via Calanasan, connecting the Claveria-Calanasan road and the Apayao (Calanasan) – Ilocos Norte Road.

The 16-kilometer Buluan-Banban-Puguin-Sacpil road, now designated as Apayao-Kalinga-Abra road, links Upper Apayao and Kalinga.

The solon and the governor are grateful for the efforts of the DPWH in the realization of the initiative, a move expected to spur economic growth and opportunities.
