During the Kapehan sa Kapitolyo on January 6, Kalinga Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Ed Tandingan revealed there were 10 accounted firework-related injuries in the province from December 21, 2024 – January 6, 2025.

Nine of the total figure were firework injuries while one is stray bullet.

According to Tandingan, most of the victims got injured on the hand, legs, and that there were two cases where victims were injured in their genitals. Other victims got hurt in the eye, palm, face, and neck.

Data from the Provincial Health Office further revealed that the 9 firecracker victims got injured by kwitis (4 cases), boga(3), luces (1), and judas belt (1).

Dr. Tandingan noted that the firework-related injuries in Kalinga in 2024 are significantly lower than the ones documented in 2023. This, he said, is due to the collaborative efforts of the local government units and the different line agencies.

“Numbers declined. We attribute that mainly to the cooperation, collaboration [of the LGUs and line agencies],” he said, recounting that a number of illegal firecrackers were also destroyed during the Holiday Season.

As of 6:00 a.m. of January 6, the Cordillera region monitored a total of 50 firework-related injuries.
