3 men arrested for slaughtering dog in Baguio City

Baguio City, Philippines – Most people consider dogs as man’s best friend, but not for the three men who were arrested in South Sanitary Camp, Baguio City on Wednesday, August 28.

The three were reported by a 40-year-old resident to authorities after observing them butchering and preparing dog meat. Police said the resident smelled something burning that time which made him take a look at what was happening.

The resident, being a dog lover, could not help but notify the police of what he witnessed.

The police immediately responded to the call and proceeded to the area to confirm the report.

They seized the meat and was confirmed by the Veterinary Office as dog meat.

Based on evidence, the suspects shall be facing charges under the Animal Welfare Act. This means there is a possibility of imprisonment for one to three years along with payment of a fine.

The police, in a statement, reminded the public of the law prohibiting cruel acts on animals.

“…Under Republic Act No. 8485, as amended by RA 10631, it is illegal to subject any animal to cruelty, maltreatment, or neglect,” they said, adding that this includes the unauthorized butchering of dogs.

If an individual witnesses such an activity, they are urged by the authorities to report to them. This is to help protect and promote animal welfare.

This is not the first time that individuals butchering dogs in the city have been arrested. It was also in June this year that a man was charged for butchering his own dog in Irisan, Baguio City.

The cruel act of how he killed his dog for its meat was witnessed by a resident in the area who took a video of it. The dog was tied to a jeepney and was hit on its head until it died.
