3 men injured during car race in Baggao, Cagayan

Cagayan, Philippines – Three men, two of them minors, were injured after a race car slammed into a crowd during a vehicle exhibition in San Jose, Baggao, Cagayan on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

The Cagayan Police Provincial Office identified the victims as Rodel Vergara, 17; Jomar Cuevas, 17; and Jaykim Pagaduan, 20. All of them are residents of Assassi, Baggao.

In the report released by the Cagayan PPO, Major Gil Pagulayan Jr., Chief of Police, explained that the Mitsubishi Lancer Elite Club didn’t mention anything about a drag race when they came to their office asking permission for the conduct of a grand rally parade in the town.

However, just after the parade, Pagulayan said that two members of the group challenged each other to a drag race to test their new cars.

The cheering of the people was said to have caught the attention of a police officer. This prompted him to go closer to the area and discovered that there was drag racing going on.

The drivers of the two vehicles were identified by the police as Carlo Christopher Lazaro, 23; and Renato Soriano, 42.

Unfortunately, just moments after the race started, the car being driven by Soriano plowed into a group of people who were watching the activity and hit two parked cars. This resulted in an accident injuring three individuals.

The three victims were immediately brought to the Baggao District Hospital.
