3 NPA leaders in Cagayan killed in gunfight

Cagayan, Philippines – Three high-value New People’s Army leaders in Cagayan were killed during a gunfight with the government troops this Maundy Thursday in Barangay Virgina, Sto. Niño.


5th Infantry Division identified the casualties as Saturnino Agunoy alias Peping who is the Head of Regional Operations Department of Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley; Mark Canta alias Uno, Giyang Politikal of West Front Committee; and alias Val, Medical Officer of the same group.


Agunoy was said to have several standing warrants of arrest. These include 12 cases of Qualified Assault Upon an Agent of Person in Authority with murder with recommended bail of P120,000 each; 2 cases of Qualified Assault Upon an Agent of Person in Authority with murder, no bail; Arson, P24,000 bail; Murder, no bail; and Rebellion with P200,000 bail recommended.

According to reports, it was alleged that the said rebels were the first ones to fire at the personnel of 17th Infantry Battalion who were on operation after receiving information about an armed group in Barangay Virgina.


The exchange of fire between the two groups lasted for 5 minutes and it resulted to the death of the three high value leaders of the Komiteng Probinsya Cagayan, Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley.

The authorities have recovered from the encounter site 2 pieces of Cal .45 pistol; a piece of hand grenade; a backpack with laptop, cellphone, flashdrive, and other personal belongings; medical supplies, and subversive documents.
