34 cases of mushroom poisoning logged in Benguet and Mt. Province from May-June 2024

Baguio City, Philippines - The Department of Health in Cordillera cautions anew the public against wild mushrooms following recent incidents of mushroom poisoning in Benguet and Mt. Province in the past two months.

The regional health department, represented by its DMO Officer IV Karen Lonogan, told local media on Thursday, July 18, that there are 34 victims of mushroom poisoning in said provinces from May to June.

Of the 34 victims, 25 of them were hospitalized, while others were able to return home shortly after immediate medical treatment.

Fortunately, no casualty was recorded as the victims were able to reach the hospital on time.

To avoid mushroom poisoning, Lonogan urged the public not to pick wild mushrooms especially when unsure if they are poisonous or not.

“Mas maganda po na iwasan na lang natin ang pagkuha ng wild mushrooms sa paligid lalo kung di naman tayo sigurado na hindi poisonous,” she said.

The public are reminded to be aware of the symptoms of mushroom poisoning so that they can proceed immediately to a medical facility for medical treatment.

As cited by the agency, the common symptoms of mushroom poisoning are allergic reactions to abdominal pains, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, hallucinations, and behavioral changes.
