Baguio City, Philippines – A total of 34 fire incidents were logged in the Cordillera region in December 2022 that caused more than P15 million in losses, reported the Bureau of Fire Protection.

The number of fire incidents recorded in just a month is concerning, according to authorities.

New figures reveal most of the fires were structural while some were rubbish fires or caused by garbage. Five others were forest fires, three were vehicular, and three were grass fires.

Of the 34 fires, 12 broke out in the City of Baguio, 10 in Benguet, six in Abra, three in Mt. Province, two in Kalinga, and one in Ifugao. No fire was reported in Apayao province in the said period, stated Community Relations Section Head, SFO1 Leo Mendoza of BFP – Cordillera.

The fires cost the region at least P15,062,035 in damage.

Nonetheless, the local fire department is glad that no firecracker-related fire incident occurred during the New Year celebration.
