37-year-old farmer in Mayoyao, Ifugao dies in landslide

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

Mayoyao, Ifugao - A 37-year-old man died after he was buried by a sudden landslide inside his brother’s house in Barangay Mongol, Mayoyao on the afternoon of August 31, 2022.

Initial investigation by the Mayoyao Municipality Police Station revealed that the victim went to his brother’s house in Sitio Natulan of said barangay to secure his motorcycle when the incident happened.

Due to the heavy rain caused by super typhoon Henry and tropical depression Gardo, the victim decided to stay at his brother’s house. It was then when the landslide occurred that buried the house, with the victim unable to move out.

After receiving a report regarding the incident, the Mayoyao MPS together with the Ifugao Provincial Police Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and other volunteers, immediately responded to conduct a search and rescue operation.

On September 1, the cadaver of the victim was recovered by the responding team.

Police identified the victim as Renie Omayho Bullan. Bullan’s remains were brought to his residence at Sitio Natimlan of the same barangay.

With said incident, PCOL James Mangili, Provincial Director, urged the public, especially those who are living near steep slopes and nearby mountains, to stay alert during and after long periods of heavy rainfall.

“We are advising the public to stay alert, especially those who are near steep slopes, close to mountain edges, near drainage ways. Short bursts of rain may be particularly dangerous, especially during and after long periods of heavy rainfall and damp weather,” he said.
