4 die after SUV rams two vehicles in Cagayan

Gonzaga, Cagayan – Four individuals, including a 7-year-old child died, while eight others were injured after a multiple-vehicle collision transpired along the national highway in Ipil, Gonzaga, Cagayan over the weekend.


The incident, according to police, happened at around 10:30 p.m. on December 3, involving a tricycle, "kulong- kulong" and a gray sport utility vehicle. The tricycle and the SUV were heading to Centro Gonzaga, Cagayan when the incident happened.


While at a one-way bridge, the tricycle stopped to give way to the oncoming "kulong-kulong. However, the approaching SUV failed to slow down, hitting the temporarily stationary tricycle, resulting in the latter to overturn.


The SUV eventually crashed into the ‘kulong-kulong’ ferrying 9 individuals before it finally bumped into a steel barrier along the highway.

The SUV driver was identified as Rodolfo Batin, 56, a resident of Quezon, Isabela, and was said to be under the influence of alcohol.


The accident resulted in the death of the ‘kulong-kulong’ driver Donato Barsatan and her passengers - Velvet Geron, Marinet Barsatan and Prince Barsatan.


Geron and Danilo who were ferried to a hospital in Gonzaga were declared dead on arrival while Marinet died while being treated in the same hospital.


As to Prince, the seven-year-old child of Danilo and Marinet, he was pronounced dead on arrival in a private hospital in Camalaniugan.


The eight individuals who suffered severe injuries due to the crash, meantime, are currently under medication.


The SUV driver, who is now in police custody, faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property.
