“4 out of 100 individuals in Kalinga living in poverty” – 2023 PSA Data

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Four out of 100 individuals were living in poverty in Kalinga in 2023, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority-Kalinga survey done during that year.

The result, however, is being welcomed positively as there is a significant decrease in number of people living in poverty as compared to the year before. In 2021, 8 out of 100 people in Kalinga were in poverty.

Said data was presented during the Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) Dissemination Forum, held at the Red Star Hotel and Events Place on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

PSA said a family of five living in various barangays in the province should have an income of P12,647 monthly to meet their basic needs – food and non-food items.

Said amount, according to the agency, was the poverty threshold in 2023. The poverty threshold, as explained, is based on the minimum income required for a family or an individual person to buy necessities.

Given the data, there was an increase of 19.3 percent in the number of people crossing the poverty threshold in 2021. On the other hand, the proportion of people below the poverty threshold in Kalinga was reduced to 2.6 percent. In 2021, those below the poverty threshold account for 5.6 percent.

In terms of food threshold, PSA Kalinga said that the monthly income to sustain food needs should be P9,019. Based on this amount, there was an increase of the number of people crossing the threshold at around 18.8 percent when compared to the 2021 data.

As to subsistence evidence, the proportion of people in extreme or subsistence poverty, PSA Kalinga said that 1 out of 100 people in Kalinga were in the said level. 2 out of 100 individuals were under this level in 2021.
