Tabuk City, Kalinga – To improve rice production in Kalinga, some 5,600 farmers were given 14,000 bags of rice seeds from the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Seed Component Program of the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera.
The agency turned over the rice seeds to the farmers of Kalinga through the Office of the Provincial Agriculture Services headed by Engr. Domingo Bakilan on November 18, 2021, at the Kalinga Astrodome.
Of these beneficiaries, 80 farmers are from Lubuagan, 3,600 from Tabuk City, 80 from Balbalan, 120 from Tinglayan, 400 from Pinukpuk, 1,000 from Rizal, 200 from Tanudan and 120 from Pasil.
On the same date, at least 16 Farmers’ Cooperative and Associations (FCAs) in the province also received farm machineries from Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech).
These farming innovations are part of DA’s RCEF Mechanization Program, as provided under Rice Tariffication Law, aiming to enhance the overall competitiveness of the rice sector in the country.
Covered in the distribution are the Local Government Units of Balbalan, Lubuagan, Tinglayan, San Pascual Agricultural Farmers, Dakaran Credit Cooperative who each received hand tractor impeller rice mill.
Four-wheel Tractors were also given each to Cawagayan Farmers Association, Kapayapaan Liwan West Farmers Irrigators, Pacak Farmers Association, Pagsayaatan Credit Cooperative, Tanggal Swip Small Impounding Dam Association.
One unit of rice harvester was also given to Kin-Iway Dagupan Farmers Association, while three units were given to Binongsay Malin-awa Savings and Loan Cooperative.
Cabaruan Multipurpose Cooperative, Matagoan Agricultural Cooperative, and Green Hills Stewards and Farmers Association each received Four-wheel Tractors with PTO Driven Disc Harrow.
Meanwhile, the DA said some 13,575 beneficiaries from Kalinga will also benefit from the P329.18 million allotted cash assistance for rice farmers in the whole Cordillera region under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund-Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RCEF-RFFA) Program of the department.
As recalled, nine units of four-wheel-drive tractors and one unit riding-type mechanical rice transplanter were distributed to seven other FCAs on May 18, 2021.
Governor Ferdinand Tubban earlier stressed that providing advanced technology is the government's way of showing support to the farmers who are considered as the backbone of the society.
Tubban challenged the beneficiaries to utilize the machineries for the improvement of their livelihood. Their progress, he said, will be monitored by PhilMec.
