55-year-old farmer in Kiangan Ifugao dies in drowning incident

Kiangan, Ifugao – A 55-year-old farmer who went missing after he was swept away by the raging waters of Mappit River in Kiangan, Ifugao on Saturday was found dead Sunday, September 25.


The man was identified by Kiangan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office as Peter Gullunan.


In an interview with a relative, she relayed Gullunan was about to go home from work when the incident happened.


“Agawid da kuma from work ket pirmi tudu na sunga nag standby da pay idiay kampo da ngem around 7 pm, agawid da kuma ket natinnag isuna idiay pinagnaan da nga nangatu nga nakabite nga settling basin ti mini dam,” the relative narrated.


A search-and-rescue operation was launched immediately by residents of Mappit, Bureau of Fire Protection – Kiangan, Kiangan PNP and responders from the office of the MDRRM to look for the man but failed to find him.

“His body was not recovered despite the search conducted until 3 AM,” Annie Dumangeng of the Kiangan MDRRMC relayed in a Facebook post.


However, search and rescue operation continued on Sunday which resulted in his recovery at Sitio Tupok, Mayoyao, Ifugao.
