Updated: Aug 1

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Even while they are locked up in jail, Persons Deprived of Liberty in Kalinga can now pursue their bachelor’s degree.

This is after the Kalinga District Jail and the Kalinga State University forged a Memorandum of Agreement for the implementation of the College Education Behind Bars(CEBB), a program of the BJMP that aims to provide PDLs the chance to finish their degrees and make the most of their time while incarcerated to prepare them in their return to the community.

Said MOA was signed by Acting Jail Warden, JSInsp. Noel Dulnuan and University President, Dr. Eduardo Bagtang on July 30, 2024.

Through the agreement, six PDLs are qualified to enroll at KSU and are due for assessment by the registrar, Community Relations Services Officer,JO3 Alma Bangibang relayed to GURU Press Cordillera.

Bangibang added that the 6 who are aged 20 – 30 years old chose their own course and that they will be studying through the blended learning modality as their classes will be held virtually, face-to-face, and modular.

“It will be tailored talaga to the educational needs ng ating PDL, very flexible po ang mode of learning,” she described.

Some of these six had already started college when they were committed to BJMP Kalinga that is why they are going to continue their studies as 2nd and 3rd-year college students, the others are graduates of the Alternative Learning System and are set to begin their higher education as freshman students.
