61-yr.- old rescuer dies of heart attack during earthquake drill in Cagayan

Gattaran, Cagayan – Even in the remaining minutes of his life, an elderly rescuer still performed his job and spearheaded an earthquake drill in Gattaran, Cagayan on Thursday, Sept. 07.

The victim was one of the team leaders of the groups formed by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office along with the police and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) staff for said drill, according to a press release by the Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

According to Bryan Jay Seguro, a staff member of MDRRMO Gattaran, they saw the victim, Elpidio Cristobal, 61, suddenly sit down while helping an individual who served as the ‘victim’ in the simulation.

His colleagues did not immediately notice that he had a heart attack since he did not say anything about what he was going through until they saw him struggle to breathe.

They then applied first aid to the victim and ferried him to a nearby medical facility, but Cristobal died while being treated.

Cristobal served as a rescuer for the last 28 years of his life, having started the job in 1995.
