Cagayan, Philippines – An 8-year-old pupil and his uncle drowned while they were on a picnic at the Cagayan river in Tuguegarao City over the weekend.

The victims, grade 2 pupil 'Reycee' and his 39-year-old uncle, 'Michael', were with their relatives at said river in Barangay Centro 1 on Saturday, May 13, when the drowning happened, the Cagayan Provincial Information Office reported.

While the family was having fun, the two reportedly went for a swim. The victims, however, were said to have failed to notice they were already at the deeper portion of the water where they drowned.

Due to the depth and strong water current, the two were not able to be saved by their relatives. Their family called for rescue but the two were already lifeless when they were found.

The younger victim was retrieved on the same day in Barangay Larion while his uncle was found on May 14.

Tuguegarao City Mayor Maila Ting Que, in a Facebook post, reminded there are areas of the Pinacanauan and Cagayan Rivers that are too dangerous for swimmers. She called for her constituents to be vigilant and to cooperate by following the warnings and safety protocols, stating that the city government doesn’t have enough manpower to guard every pathway, river bank, and embankment.

“We have lost so many lives because people go and think that they can handle the deep waters, many problems arise especially when liquor is involved,” she conveyed, appealing for parents to also monitor where their children are going.
