9 and 5-year-old siblings in Isabela drown in water-filled construction pit

Ramon, Isabela – Police warned parents on Tuesday, August 16 to look after their children especially during this rainy season, following the drowning of two siblings in Barangay Burgos, Ramon, Isabela.

Marianne Contawe, nine (9) and her five-year-old brother Supremo were said to be playing near their residence in Purok 6, Burgos on a Sunday afternoon, August 14 when the tragedy happened.

A local report said that at around 4PM, their parents went to look for their children but were not around.

A wider search was done by the villagers and found the siblings at 7:50 PM. The victims, however, were already dead.

The bodies were discovered in a 2-meter deep construction pit that was filled with floodwater caused by a heavy downpour. The pit was said to have been dug up for the ongoing construction of a warehouse.

“Nagkataon na Sabado at Linggo, walang mga workers dahil sobrang malakas ang ulan at siguro napadpad ang dalawa(ng) bata doon kaya nangyari ang incident,” one of the resident said.

The barangay officials will locate the owner of the warehouse who, according to the police, should shoulder the burial expenses for the victims.
