9 education institutions in Cordillera among 2023 Global Top Innovative Universities


Tabuk City, Kalinga – At least nine higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Cordillera made it to the Global Top 300 Innovative Universities through the 2023 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).


The news was announced at the conclusion of the Hybrid WURI Conference 2023, held from May 14 to 18 via Zoom and face-to-face at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida, USA.


Now in its fourth year, the WURI measures the creative and innovative programs among universities which provide an important contribution toward enhancing research and education.

The WURI evaluated the universities based on the six key issues as follows: industrial application of counting research papers and lecture-type teaching; value-creating startups and entrepreneurship; social responsibility, ethics, and integrity; student mobility and openness for exchange and collaboration; crisis management in the midst of climate change, COVID-19 pandemic, and other global and local crisis; and progress during the Fourth Industrial Revolution through digital technology, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud services, blockchain, among others.


Out of the 51 HEIs from the Philippines that earned their place in the ranking, 18% are from CAR. These institutions have proven their dedication to pushing boundaries, fostering innovation, and nurturing an environment conducive to academic excellence, said Commission on Higher Education – Cordillera.


Ifugao State University (IFSU), Kalinga State University, Saint Louis University (SLU), University of Baguio (UB), and University of the Cordilleras (UC) are on the Rank 101 - 200, while Abra State Institute of Science and Technology, Benguet State University (BSU), and Mountain Province State Polytechnic College are on the Rank 201-300 spots.

Ranking by Areas


Cordillera Career Development College in La Trinidad, Benguet ranked 35th in Ethical Value; BSU ranked 38th in the Industrial Revolution; and IFSU ranked 42nd in Ethical Value and ranked 35th in Industrial Revolution.


Meanwhile, UC made it to Rank 45 in Entrepreneurial Spirit, Rank 28 in Industrial Revolution, and Rank 43 in Student Mobility and Openness.


UB is at Rank 43 in Entrepreneurial Spirit, while SLU settled at Rank 40 in Industrial Application, Rank 43 in Entrepreneurial Spirit, and Rank 29 in Industrial Revolutions.
