Updated: Oct 18, 2023

Balbalan, Kalinga – The government troops discovered an abandoned camp of the communist New People’s Army in Balbalan, Kalinga over the weekend.

This was after soldiers of the 503rd Infantry “Peace and Justice” Brigade came across the encampment in Gawaan, Balbalan, around 300 meters away from the abandoned NPA lair found by the army in the same village in February 2023.

The makeshift shelter can accommodate about 15 people, based on the materials.

The army recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), two sets of firing devices switch, IED wire, one magazine of cal. 9mm, kitchen utensils, pregnancy test kits, kitchen utensils, and other subversive documents.

The army believed that the NPA members fled the area due to their dwindled and weakened forces.

To recall, a rebel commander was killed and two high-powered guns were recovered during the encounter between the government troops and the members of the Komiteng Larangan Guerilla-Baggas and the Regional Sentro De Gravidad-Ilocos Cordillera Regional Committee on March 9 at Sitio Babacong in Gawaan, Balbalan
