Abra lawyer shot multiple times by riding-in-tandem

Bangued, Abra - A lady lawyer handling mostly pro-bono cases was shot multiple times outside her home in Barangay Zone 2, Bangued, by riding-in-tandem afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023.

Lawyer Maria Saniata Liwliwa Gonzales Alzate was inside her white Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan parked in front of their gate when the shooting incident transpired.

In the CCTV footage, it can be seen that the back rider was the first one to shoot the victim multiple times, and while they were about to leave the scene, the driver stopped beside the car and shot the lawyer numerous times.

After committing the crime, the assailants fled the scene and headed towards the direction of Barangay Consiliman Zone 2, Bangued.

The victim, meantime, was ferried to the Seares Memorial Hospital in Bangued but died while being treated.

As to the motive of the crime, authorities are still uncertain whether it is related to the victim’s job since she handled many cases when she was still alive.

CCTV footage is now being reviewed to determine the identity of the suspects.

In a statement by Raphiel F. Alzate, former acting presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court Branch 24 in Ilocos Sur and the RTC Branch 58 in Abra, he said the funeral wake of his late wife will be held at their residence in Bangued.

“Please omit flowers. Instead, say a little prayer for the repose of her soul and that justice will be served the soonest. Instead of flowers, please donate to a legal fund for the cases she is handling, most of her cases are pro bono, so it can be used to continue the legal aid to which she dedicated when she was still alive,” he stated.
