Abra PLGU considering bamboo straw as alternative to plastic straw

Abra, Philippines – As the Department of Environment and Natural resources gears toward banning plastic straws and plastic coffee stirrer as part of the implementation of the Ecological Waste Management Act of 2000, the Provincial Government of Abra is looking into the possible use of bamboo straw as an alternative.

According to PLGU Abra, chances are that there shall be increase in the demand of bamboo straw when plastic materials previously mentioned shall soon be included in the list of non-environmentally approved products (NEAP).

“Posible a dumakkel ti demand daytuy gapu ta maiparit tun ti panagusar ti plastic straw ken coffee stirrer nga inaprobaran kas non-environmentally -acceptable products babaen iti National Solid Waste Commission (NSWMC),” the PLGU said in a post.

Possible addition of the plastic items in the NEAP list was announced last week by DENR as the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) approved a draft resolution aiming to include the two to the NEAP list.

NSWMC was mandated by said law to prepare a list of non-environmentally acceptable products that should be prohibited.

In a statement by Environment and Natural Resources Officer Cris Albolete, he said the bamboo straw is eco-friendly and when ban of plastic items will be implemented alongside the observance of the “No to Plastic Policy” of Abra, it will be a great help in decreasing garbage in the province.

“Ditoy Abra, ti Balbin’s Furniture ti agdama nga agilaklako iti bamboo straw. Makadanun pay sadiay Manila ken Cebu ti produkto da,” LGU Abra wrote.

Other items included in the list of NEAP under NSWMC Resolution 1363 are these:

· plastic cups (lower than 0.2 mm in thickness)

· plastic spoons

· plastic forks

· plastic knives

· plastic labo and thin-filmed sando bags
