Updated: Aug 6, 2021

Abra, Philippines – The Province of Abra now has its first university after President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the conversion of the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST) into University of Abra.

Republic Act 11574 or ‘An Act Converting the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology in the Municipalities of Lagangilang and Bangued, Province of Abra into a State University, to be known as the University of Abra and Appropriating Funds Therefore’ was authored by Congressman Joseph Bernos.

Bernos earlier stated that the conversion of ASIST into a university will open up a number of opportunities for the institution, which will benefit the students and the entire province.

He also added that this will improve the quality of teaching, even the research output, stressing that this is a victory for the people, specifically for the youth who could now avail of quality education.

Under the law, it is stated that the university ‘shall primarily provide advance education, higher technological and professional instruction and training’ in various fields such as education, agricultural technology, agribusiness management, industrial technology, arts and sciences, forestry, health sciences, information technology, and other relevant fields.

Part of the university’s general mandate is to undertake research and extension services and provide progressive leadership in its areas of specializations.

Moreover, for its curricular offerings, the University of Abra will offer short-term technical vocational, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs ‘within its competency and areas of specialization’.

The laboratory senior high school and elementary school will continue to operate under the supervision of the College of Education.

The University of Abra is the 6th state university in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
