Abra solon condemns murder of healthcare worker and a former mayoralty candidate in Pilar town

Abra, Philippines – Abra Representative Joseph Bernos condemned the killing of a healthcare worker and a former mayoralty candidate from the municipality of Pilar as he called for the swift delivery of justice on the front liner’s untimely death.

The solon also urged Abreños, who may have knowledge of the incident, to come forward for the perpetrators to answer their crime.

In his statement this Sunday, September 18, 2021, Bernos said that during these times, healthcare workers are of utmost importance to keep communities safe from the threats of the dreaded Covid-19 and it is for the said reason that he issued the statement strongly condemning the heartless killing of Dr. Amor Trina Dait, 52, and resident doctor in La Paz District Hospital.

“Dr. Dait’s untimely death is tantamount to the denial of more immediate and more accessible health services for the people. One less medical frontliner equates to graver circumstances for us in dealing with this pandemic. We should treasure our healthcare workers and give them the respect they deserve as they protect us and our communities from COVID-19,” Bernos said.

Bernos added that what is more regretful in the senseless killing is that, while Dait did not express any desire to run for the mayorship or any other elective position, the incident coincides at a time when the election season is about to begin.

“It seems that our job to keep the reign of peace and order in Abra, most especially with the upcoming election season, is not yet over as we still have to fully eradicate such criminal acts in the Province, which includes capturing Dr. Dait’s murderers,” the representative expressed.

Dr. Dait, as recalled, was shot in her home in Barangay Poblacion, Pilar, Abra, at about 7:30 PM on Saturday, September 18, 2021. She was shot in the left leg and was brought to the Abra Provincial Hospital, where she died.

Police found five slugs from an M-16 rifle at the crime scene.

In a recent police report, another shooting incident was recorded in the province on Sunday, September 19, which happened at Sitio Tiker Barangay Budac, Tayum, Abra.

The victim, who is a fast-food vendor and a resident in the area, was identified as Aileen Daria. She sustained a gunshot wound on her lower back and was rushed to the Abra Provincial Hospital in Bangued for treatment.

At present, police are now in search of the suspects of the incidents.
