Not once, not thrice nor five times, but 10 times. That is the number of times a teacher in Bucay, Abra had to go through before she could finally get the phone and call her parents to tell them they have a licensed professional teacher.
Ma. Haydee Alagao Rid recently became a living example of perseverance, hard work, and faith after passing the March 2024 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and taking her oath as a full-fledged teacher on July 7.
Her feat came with having to navigate a bumpy ride for the past eight years before she got to where she is now, an LPT and the only college graduate and professional in their family.
The only college graduate in the family
Rid, recounting her experience to GURU Press Cordillera, relayed she first took the LET in 2016 after finishing Bachelor of Elementary Education at Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology Bangued Campus. However, Rid was not able to make it on the list of passers.
The setbacks were harder on her as she, the youngest and only girl of five siblings, is the only one to have graduated from college in the family. She wanted to push herself and get her license to give her parents – a farmer and a housewife – a professional daughter.
“Nagsangitak, ma'am, nasaktanak ken na-dissapoint lalo para ti pamilyak ta siyak la nakabasa kadakami nga five agkakabsat, maymaysa nga babai ken naudyan,” she narrated.
Always getting back on her feet
She continuously took the LET, but she was yet to pass it after several attempts. While waiting for her time to pass, she applied as a volunteer teacher in Bucay from October 2020 to July 2023.
The turning point in her journey to getting her license was when she was referred to work as a review ambassador at a review center in Abra. She passed the interview and while working there and juggling her tasks, she took this opportunity to also learn along with the reviewees who were at the time set to take the March 2024 LET.
“Hanak met nga naawan ti namnama kasi kayat ko talaga nga makapasa nakon kasi kunak adu pay ti nakapasan nga mano take dan siyak tu la ngatan,” she said.
After 10 attempts, Rid finally reaped the fruit of her perseverance as her name appeared in the list of passers released by the Professional Regulation Commission on May 24, 2024.
Eight years after she first took the LET, Rid was finally able to phone her parents who were not aware she took the board exam in March and told them the news that she passed.
“Pudno ti ragsak da uray da la nakasangit, ma'am. Kuna ni mamang ko, apay naglibas ka nga napan nag-exam kunana, wen mang isu nga adda anak yu nga maestran,” she recalled.
Advice to board exam retakers
Rid advised exam takers not to give up and believe that their dreams will be realized sooner through hard work, determination, and faith.
“Haan da nga sumuko, madapa man at mahirapan, bangon lang at lumaban para sa pangarap. Magtiwala at tulungan ang sarili at laging magdasal. Hindi hadlang kung ilan take ka na, hindi ko rin ikinakahiya kung ilan take na ako, maski ipakita sa lahat na kayang-kaya mong abutin ang iyong pangarap,” she said.
