Additional 15 HIV/AIDS monitored in Abra from January – June 2023

Abra, Philippines – Abra provincial health department has documented additional cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome(HIV/AIDS) in the province during the first half of the year.


Provincial Department of Health Office Chief, Dr. Lilibeth B. Martin, as mentioned by PIA Cordillera, reported their office monitored a total of 15 HIV/AIDS cases from January to June 2023.


This brought the cumulative cases in the province to 124.

Martin likewise revealed that Abra is the third province in the Cordillera in terms of the number of documented HIV/AIDS cases – the first being Baguio City followed by Benguet.


Another concern she further mentioned is the growing trend of younger people incurring HIV/AIDS. She cited that as young as 15 years old, they already have the disease.


The Abra Provincial Department of Health Office Chief then asserted the importance of getting tested, citing that the symptoms of HIV/AIDS may not manifest for years.


HIV, an infection that attacks the body’s immune system which could progress to AIDS, is continuously increasing in the Philippines, the Department of Health bared last month.


The department projected 364,000 cases by 2030.
