Aguinaldo fisherfolk receive fish cages, 24,000 fingerlings from BFAR-CAR

Aguinaldo, Ifugao – Five to six months from now, a total of 3,000 kilograms of tilapia is expected to be harvested in the fish cages of two fisher groups from Aguinaldo, Ifugao.


This is following the provision of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) circular fish cages, each containing 12,000 tilapia fingerlings and feeds, to Progressive Organization (Halag 1 and 2) and Halag Aqua Fisherfolk Association (Halag 3 and 4), both from said town.


Also given the same by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Cordillera, during the turnover ceremony held in Magat Dam, Ifugao on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, were United Christian Fisherfolk and Farmers Association (UCFFA), and Riverside Rural Improvement Club (RRIC) from Alfonso Lista; and the Maguitawa Farmers and Fisherfolk Association (MFFA) from Mayoyao.


All groups got one fish cage each.


In total, the five cages with 10-meter diameter and 6-meter in depth cost P3.8 million, according to the said bureau.

The grant, it added, is part of its livelihood project under its fisheries development program in its bid to maximize the use of the Magat water resource at the same time sustain fisherfolk’s livelihood for increased production and income.


The initiative is likewise pursuant to the Republic Act 11321 known as the Farmers and Fisherfolk Enterprise Development Program or the “Sagip Saka Act of 2019” aimed at broadening the state's interventions from production to processing and marketing using the value chain system of the agricultural sector.


After the said cropping period, each cage shall produce 1,500 kg of tilapia.


In a statement, Aguinaldo Mayor Gaspar Chilagan Jr. expressed his utmost gratitude to the bureau for the aid and support they had been delivering for the improvement of the lives of fish farmers in town.


It can be recalled that in 2021 fisherfolks in the same province, including those in Aguinaldo and Alfonso Lista were provided with some 25 units of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) boats.
