Cagayan, Philippines – The heat is on in the Philippines particularly in Aparri and Tuguegarao City which consistently recorded dangerously high heat index, ranging from 42°C to 45 °C since last week.

Based on the PAGASA records, heat index in Aparri this Monday, April 21, is at 44°C while Tuguegarao is at 43°C. The scorching temperature in these two places are forecast by the weather bureau to remain relatively the same on April 22 – both at 44°C.

The critically high temperature in the two areas put them under the danger category, meaning some people can experience heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Heat stroke, moreover, is said to be probable with continued exposure to the sun under the dangerous category.

With the intense heat being felt in the country since March, the Department of Health earlier advised the public to drink plenty of water and not iced tea, soda, coffee, or alcohol to prevent heat-related illnesses. They also told the public to avoid going outside from 10:000 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and to use hats, umbrellas, and other sun protection devices when they have to go outdoors.

As for the first-aid measures for heat-related illnesses, the DOH advised individuals to move the person suffering from the illness to a shaded, cool area with proper ventilation; remove excess clothing and apply cold compresses, ice packs, cold water, or damp cloths to the head, face, neck, armpits, wrists, ankles, and groin; encourage slow and frequent sips of cold water if the patient is conscious; and seek emergency medical help.
