Aparri, Cagayan Vice Mayor, 5 others ambushed in Nueva Vizcaya

Cagayan, Philippines – Vice Mayor Rommel Alameda of Aparri, Cagayan and his five companions were killed Sunday morning, February 19 in Baretbet, Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya.

The vice mayor and his companions were on board a black Hyundai Starex when they were ambushed along the National Highway around 8:45 a.m., says Police Regional Office 2.

Their vehicle was riddled with bullets by at least six unidentified men who used a white Mitsubishi Adventure with plate number SFN 713. Authorities believed that the suspects used different firearms in the crime.

The assailants were likewise described to be wearing PNP Pixelized uniform.

Vice Mayor Rommel passed away including Alexander Agustin Delos Angeles, 47; Alvin Dela Cruz Abel, 48; Abraham Dela Cruz Ramos Jr, 48; John Duane Banag Almeda, 46; and a man who are yet to be identified. All of the victims were from Aparri, Cagayan.

Not PNP personnel

Cagayan Valley Police Regional Director, PBGen. Percival Rumbaoa confirmed that the suspects are not members of the Philippine National Police.

As of writing, the operatives are hunting down the suspects and the Nueva Vizcaya Police Provincial Office has already formed a Special Investigation Task Group that will probe the incident.

Good standing

In a statement, Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba conveyed that Vice Mayor Rommel is a respected person, a politician of good standing, and a charismatic and promising young leader.

"We condemn this cowardly and dastardly act done against Vice Mayor Rommel Alameda and his five companions all from Aparri," Mamba stated in a report released by the Cagayan Provincial Information Office.
