Apayao joins IP Month celebration with cultural performances from its 7 municipalities

Luna, Apayao- The provincial government of Apayao joined the nationwide celebration of the Indigenous Peoples Month featuring various cultural performances from its seven municipalities.

This year’s celebration is anchored with the theme “Pagpapayaman ng Pamanag Kultura at Katutubong Yaman Tungo sa mas Maliwanag na Kinabukasan para sa Bagong Pilipinas”.

IP month is being celebrated yearly to promote inclusivity and social justice, highlighting the need of preserving the nation's diversity and varied cultures.

Likewise, said event intends to commemorate the Indigenous Peoples Right Act (IPRA), recognizing the role of IPs in nation building and their big contributions to the Philippine history and culture.

Now on its 26th year of commemoration, IPRA also acknowledges, defends, and promotes the IPs’ rights.

As mentioned by the Apayao Provincial Public Information Office, Governor Elias K. Bulut was a co-author of this act, which was created to raise awareness of indigenous culture and to foster collaboration.

On Oct. 24, 2023, IPs from the 7 municipalities of Apayao came together at Apayao Eco- Tourism and Sports Complex and showcased the province’s culture and traditions through various activities.

These include indigenous games, dances, food, music, oral tradition contests such as tabbag, dissodi, and Battle of the Bands, among others.

Apayao, to recall, is home to several tribes, including the Isnag and Agtas, which represent the province’s dynamic indigenous groups.
