Apayao begins two-weeklong Say-am Festival with Sports fair

Luna, Apayao – Say-am Festival, Apayao’s grandest festival which had been on a two-year hiatus is finally having a comeback as it kicks off this February 1 through a Sports festival.


Debuted in 1996, Say-am Festival is held annually in honor of the culture of Isneg, and serves as a festive recollection of the founding date of the province which had been separated from Kalinga in 1995 through the efforts of then solon, Elias Bulut Sr.


To start with, a sports motorcade participated in by all municipalities – Calanasan, Conner, Flora, Kabugao, Luna, Pudtol and Sta. Marcela was held. It was likewise joined by officials and personnel of national line agencies in the Cordillera’s nature’s last frontier.

In the opening program, muses of each sporting municipality were presented followed by a dance showdown by the delegates, displaying their abilities to captivate audiences with various dance moves.


Luna, the host municipality was named the champion for the dance showdown while Pudtol’s muse snatched the ‘best muse’ award.


The sash-donning of the candidates for Dayag ti Apayao also served as one of the highlights of the event.


Reminding the essence of the event is Governor Elias Bulut Jr., saying the celebration is in commemoration of how Apayao was founded and how the public contributed to its development over the last 28 years.

He later on solicited the continued participation of the seven municipalities in the two-weeklong celebration.


The declaration of the official opening of the sports fest followed and to start the games, a ceremonial toss was performed by the governor himself.


Gracing the opening of the sports festival were Ateneo Blue Eagles Middle Blocker Pia Ildefonso and National University Bulldogs Combo Guard Donn Lim.
