‘Apo Whang-od the movie’, the life of oldest hand-tapped tattoo artist in the works

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

Tabuk City, Kalinga – A biographical movie presenting the life of the country’s oldest hand-tapped tattoo artist, Apo Whang-od is in the works.

The movie, which is set to highlight Kalinga’s vibrant culture and tradition, will be produced by Zebel Entertainment Inc (ZBI), according to Dionica Legasi of the Provincial Information Office.

The entertainment company focuses on producing films aimed at uplifting moral values and showcasing remarkable events produced worldwide.

One known film they produced is “On My Honor: Heroes Reborn”– a movie adaptation of a book describing and acknowledging the bravery, heroism, daring acts, and selflessness of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.

On Thursday, August 4, some staff of the entertainment company made a visit to the province, particularly to the provincial government’s office, and proposed a public-private partnership in the making of the movie.

The PLGU, as a response, said they will fully cooperate on said endeavor and tasked the Provincial Tourism Office led by Lorraine Ngao-i to work closely with the group.

With the positive response of the PLGU and the cooperation of the Local Government Unit of Tinglayan, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the community of Buscalan, the group is hopeful that the making of the film will emerge successful.

As for the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process required when dealing with the culture and traditions of Indigenous Peoples, Legasi said the group already complied with it.

“To guarantee the equal consideration of the various perspectives within the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs), the group undergone the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process,” she relayed in a press release.

Legasi explained that FPIC is ‘the right of indigenous peoples to give or withhold their consent for any action that would affect their lands, territories or rights’.

The exact date when the filming begins has not been announced but PIO Kalinga stressed, it will start soon.
