Appas Barangay Tanods, in Tabuk prioritize students’ safety to avoid tragic road accidents

Tabuk City, Kalinga - The presence of Barangay Tanods of Appas at  Appas Integrated School has been intensified to avoid possible tragic accidents as students have to cross the wide highway to get to the school.

Given the high number of road accidents in Tabuk City, these barangay tanods are deployed every day at the pedestrian lane and areas near the school assisting students and anyone who need to get to the other side.

Elementary students at Appas Integrated School are among the residents in the barangay who often leave their homes to attend classes from Mondays to Fridays. Their parents cannot send them to school and cannot look for them on a daily basis as they also have jobs to attend to in order to support their family.

While their children are out of their sights, the barangay tanods of Appas now become the students’ security, ensuring that they are safe while they are at their “second home”.

The Barangay Local Government Unit of Appas, through the leadership of Barangay Captain Bernard Glenn Dao-as, said they are committed to ensuring the safety of its residents in or outside their homes, thus the positioning of the tanods whereby residents may have immediate help in cases of emergencies.

In an interview with Guru Press Cordillera, Barangay Secretary Brenda Depalog said tanods’ concerted efforts, which include assisting the students cross the pedestrian and traffic control,   made the parents feel at peace about the safety of their children while at the school premises.

“Safety dagidiay ubbing, agiballasiw da pinagseserek ti morning inggana pinagaawid ti malem,” she said.

Through their consistent presence and support, the barangay tanods became integral pillars of the students' daily routine.

“They were mandated by our barangay captain... nagaget ken naanus dagiti tanod mi,” the barangay secretary added.
