Tabuk City, Kalinga – Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Barangay Appas, Tabuk City felt their importance and the care of the barangay local government when they were given an early surprise Christmas gift from BLGU on Friday, December 13, 2024.
Said barangay recognizes the vital role of PWDs in the character and progress of the community. In Barangay Appas, they are treated with respect and protected from abuse, exploitation, and violence.
The gift giving, organized the Appas BLGU trough its barangay council and PWD Office President Ritchen Drapiza , aims to uplift the spirits of the PWDs and make them feel the love of their barangay officials and give them encouragement to pursue growth in what they want to achieve.
A total of eighty-two PWDs in said barangay received various grocery items/food for Christmas during the activity. The provision of the gift, according to the BLGU, was made possible through its MOOE support to PWD fund.
In an interview with the Guru Press Cordillera, Appas Barangay "Kagawad" Luisa S. Apil relayed that the activity is conducted by the BLGU every year, particularly in the month of December, as a simple way of showing to the PWDs that they are not excluded from the services of the barangay.
"Daytoy nga activity tayo ket mai-conconduct every year tapno maipakita tayo ti panagayat tayo ti PWDs tayo ditoy. They are an important part of our community... Iparikna tayo that they are valued and loved not just during the holiday season but amin nga aldaw,” Apil shared.
Apil added that such activity is not just about giving gifts but also about fostering a sense of equality. According to her, Barangay Appas is the first barangay in Tabuk City so far to conduct a gift-giving for PWDs this year.
"Kayat mi nga dagitoy PWDs nga marikna da nga haan mi suda maliplipatan and that their well-being matters to us. It’s a small but meaningful way of showing them that they are always in our hearts," she added.
Apart from giving gifts, the BLGU, under the leadership of Captain Bernard Glenn Dao-as, has implemented several initiatives for their PWDs throughout the year, such as livelihood support and medical aid, among others.
The BLGU is also collaborating with the concerned agencies to raise awareness about disability rights and ensure that their PWDs are integrated into community activities.
