Authorities in Baguio seek suspect behind stray bullet that hit priest during New Year festivities

Baguio City, Philippines - An investigation is underway after a Catholic priest was struck by a stray bullet during New Year celebrations in Purok 7, Barangay Irisan, Baguio City.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with indiscriminate firing during celebrations.

The 60-year-old victim residing at the Holy Family Parish in Barangay Bakakeng Norte sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder during the incident.

Reports indicate that the priest had traveled to Purok 7 to lead a Holy Mass in preparation for the New Year festivities. After the service, he joined the local community to witness a fireworks display.

While observing the spectacle, the priest felt a sudden itch on his left shoulder, which he discovered was bleeding upon scratching it.

Authorities suspect a 9mm caliber firearm was used in the incident, and the projectile is currently with the forensic team at the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) for identification and ballistic analysis.

In Cordillera, the Department of Health recorded five injuries caused by stray bullets during the New Year celebrations, emphasizing the need for safety measures during such festivities.

Local government units have taken steps to minimize fireworks-related injuries, implementing centralized fireworks displays and enforcing stricter regulations on firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.
