Authorities raise alarms over bird trapping activities in Mt. Pulag, Kabayan, Benguet

Kabayan, Benguet - Officials in charge of the wildlife management of Mt. Pulag in Kabayan, Benguet raised alarms over reported cases of bird trapping in the area.

In her interview with media in Baguio, Mt. Pulag National Park Management Superintendent Emerita Albas said she received several reports of bird trapping activities in the area, mostly occurring at night.

Albas expressed sadness about the situation, especially since most of the birds being trapped are migratory species, highlighting the possibility of embarrassment if birds disappear in Benguet or in the Cordillera region.

Additionally, Abas recounted an incident recently where an individual was injured while attempting to catch a bird, which is also one of the dangers involved in such actions. "The birds that are caught are probably sold or cooked as food," she added.

Mt. Pulag draws thousands of visitors every year because of its breathtaking view and biodiversity. However, if the bird trapping of people there continues, it will impact the whole ecosystem of the park and its appeal as a tourist attraction will be damaged.

Thus, Albas appealed to those residents engaged in bird trapping to stop the act, as such doings violate Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation Act of 2001.

Violators of said law shall face legal consequences.
