Authorities urged to act swiftly in apprehending perpetrators behind Abra lawyer's death

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

Abra, Philippines – The Integrated Bar of the Philippines - Northern Luzon Region condemned the ‘heartless attack’ against the ‘strongly dedicated lawyer’ in Abra and has urged government authorities to act swiftly to bring justice to the victim.

Lawyer Ma. Saniata Liwliwa Gonzales Alzate was parking her vehicle in front of her house in Barangay Zone 2, Bangued at around 4:45 on Thursday afternoon when she was shot by riding-in-tandem who are still at large. She later died while being treated at the hospital.

Alzate was described by the IBP - Northern Luzon Region as a ‘strongly principled lady lawyer and an epitome of valor.’

“She readily heeded to the call for help of the underprivileged, oppressed and downtrodden,” it added.

In a separate statement, Abra Gov. Dominic Valera likewise condemned the ‘merciless’ killing of the lawyer who was a “strong-willed lawyer, a defender of those in need, and a friend to many.”

Provincial Director, PCOL Froiland Lopez of Abra police assured they are expediting their investigation to determine those responsible for the incident. He called on the public to provide them any information that would aid their investigation.

Alzate, who served as Chapter President for two terms, and sat as Commissioner of Bar Discipline since 2015, was the wife of Raphiel F. Alzate, the former acting presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court Branch 24 in Ilocos Sur, and the RTC Branch 58 in Abra.
