Azurin declares former BuCor chief Bantag a fugitive

Manila, Philippines – Just like anybody who has an existing warrant of arrest but has not been arrested, former Bureau of Corrections Chief Gerald Bantag is considered a fugitive.

Philippine National Police chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said this in his media interview at Camp Crame on Monday, April 17, 2023.

Bantag was among the individuals indicted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) over the killing of radio broadcaster Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa in October 2022 and the alleged plot “middleman,” New Bilibid Prison (NBP) inmate Cristito “Jun Villamor” Palaña.

The DOJ, accordingly, found probable cause to charge Bantag and his former Deputy Security Officer, Ricardo Zulueta with murder on two counts. They were named “principals by inducement” in the May 9 resolution.

Earlier this month, Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court ordered the arrest of Bantag and Zulueta who are still at large.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director, Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr. then ordered a massive manhunt to arrest the two accused.

The camp of Bantag has yet to issue a statement.
