Babalan LGU pushes for demarcation of ‘Banao Protected Landscape’


Balbalan, Kalinga – The Local Government Unit of Balbalan is pursuing the demarcation of Banao Protected Landscape to conserve and preserve the native plants, wild animals, and other species thriving in the area.


Balbalan Local Government Unit, headed by Mayor Almar Malannag, together with the barangay officials of Banao tribes discussed the importance of demarcating the boundaries of said protected landscape on December 6, 2022 at the DENR Satellite Field Office in Barangay Balbalasang.


Malannag stated that demarcating the Banao protected landscape is one of the best ways that could protect and preserve the living sanctuaries and natural resources in the area for the next generation.

Other reasons to demarcate Banao protected landscape


Royce Lingbawan, Malannag’s Executive Assistant, explained that the demarcation of said protected area would identify the exact area and the boundaries of the said protected landscape.


He added that determining the true landmark of the said area is in the pursuant to the implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 11688 known as the Banao Protected Landscape Act.


The Banao Protected Landscape in Balbalan covers 21,567.83 hectares.


The Banao landscape is divided into two zones, the multi-use zone and the stricter protected zone.

What is RA 11688?


RA 11688 or Banao Protected Landscape Act was signed into law by former President Rodrigo Duterte on April 8, 2022.


The act mandates the declaration of the parcel of land located in the municipality of Balbalan, with the category of a protected landscape under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) to be referred to as the Banao Protected Landscape, providing for its management, and appropriation of funds.
