Baguio City farmers granted urban agricultural tools by DA-Cordillera

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – To help boost urban farming in the city, various farmer cooperatives and associations (FCAs), barangays, public schools, and other organizations received farming tools from the Department of Agriculture - Cordillera through its sustainable program.

The beneficiaries got their agricultural tools following a turnover ceremony on March 7, 2023.

These include a knapsack sprayer, one roll rubber hose, one hand trowel, three water sprinklers, one Mapal bed, one wheelbarrow, one pair of rubber boots, one shovel, five packs of Value One seeds, and five citrus seedlings. Fourteen of the recipients also received one roll of black nets each.

As relayed by DA-CAR, the project is under its High-Value Crops Development Program and is part of the National Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Program which aims to support urban agriculture.

Through Urban gardening, DA-Cordillera believes that food could be more accessible and affordable among the people in urban and per-urban areas. They likewise noted that the project gives knowledge and additional income to people who want to venture into agriculture.

Meantime, on the same day, DA-Cordillera together with other government agencies and barangay officials planted citrus trees in Burnham-Legarda. This is to further promote the Halina’t Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay (HAPAG) Kadiwa’y Yaman (KAY) Plants for Bountiful Barangays Movement (PBBM) whose goal is to strengthen the capacities of barangays towards agriculture initiatives.
