Baguio City postpones installation of tactile pavement for the visually impaired

Baguio City, Philippines – Baguio City local government held off the installation of tactile pavement for the visually impaired as the LGU seeks for safer types of tiles to avoid possible accidents.

The announcement of the postponement was done by City Mayor Benjamin Magalong on August 24, 2022 following another report that one more individual suffered injuries because of the slippery tiles.

The DPWH-BCDEO, as reported by the Mt. Province Broadcasting Corporation, said in a public forum on August 22 that they shall not support the said project until the materials used are proven non-slippery and safe for everyone.

The department said that they shall continue the project once the materials they asked are provided.

City Administrator Bonifacio Dela Pena, meantime, said that there is a need to consult with the visually impaired individuals who are the beneficiaries of said project as they too are affected.

The city LGU is currently looking into removing the old yellow tiles that were laid on the sidewalks, especially in the slope and narrow areas, to prevent slip accidents.

Mayor Magalong explained that the project has a good intention, especially that it is for those with disabilities. However, he reminded the residents that if possible, during the rainy season, they avoid stepping on the tiles to prevent unwanted accidents.
