Baguio City reports closing of 957 business establishments amid pandemic


Baguio City, Philippines - A total of 957 business establishments in Baguio City stopped operation and surrendered their business permits back to the city government due to the heavy impact brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.


A report by Allan Abayao, Supervising Administrative Officer of the Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO), showed that more than two years since the pandemic began, 194 establishments gave up their business permits in 2020, 428 in 2021, and 335 as of May this year.


Public Information Office - City of Baguio reported that the business establishments that closed down were under accommodation and food services, souvenir shops, bars, amusement, review centers, schools and establishments that categorized as non-essential services such as spa, beauty parlor, salons, and laundry services, and others.

The manufacturing industry likewise suffered the same fate. The number of manufacturers were 649 pre-pandemic, but is now at 607.


Meantime, Administrative and Support Service Activities - mostly computer services and computer shops, travel and tours also saw a decrease from 842 to 568; while Financial and insurance activities, including microfinance, declined from 503 to 491.


The Education, Transport and Storage, Arts, Entertainment and Recreation, Information and Communication, Electricity and Gas, and Water Supply, Sewerage, and Waste Management were included in the affected businesses that recorded decline in 2020 and 2021.
